good examples of monochrome
I just ran across this on FlickR. I thought they were great and thought I would post them in preparation for next week's lecture.
The title should be linked to the photos.

Best Laid Plans....
Well, the golf tournament I am working in Puerto Rico has been non-stop torrential rain for the first two days of golf, in which no golf happened... so we are pushed back to a Monday finish (at the earliest). So I will miss the Monday class. Hopefully it will be on Lightroom, so I won't miss too much.
Enjoy this picture before the rains came....

Reducing Halos in HDR Photos
FYI, the book "Complete Guide to High Dynamic Range Digital Photography" by Ferrell McCollough recommends using the 'highlights smoothing' adjustment to reduce halos, and notes that this works best with clear sky shots, less so with clouds present.
I haven't tried this myself, but wanted to pass it along before I forgot.

Back to class soon
Hello there,
So what was accomplished in the past 4 weeks of class? I know that at least 1 class was cancelled due to snow - any others? We have this Monday, March 8th, off for spring break... what is the topic for March 15th?
Thanks, looking forward to being back in class!

Bad Roads
I too found the roads questionable and decided against driving into Oakland. Hopefully someone can let us in on what was covered last night. Thanks much.
I've got snow in all the wrong places...
Hello, I think there is more snow in Pittsburgh than here at the Olympics. We haven't been able to run any downhill skiing until today, a week after I got here. It was colder in Pittsburgh too!
Did you guys have class on Feb 8th, or today? If so, a recap would be appreciated.
Here are a few pics from here, mainly from my cell phone. It has been rainy and not quite the best for pictures of the mountains, but I am hoping to get some soon... meanwhile, these few will have to suffice.

Winter Wonderland (2/15 Class)
I'm not sure where all of you live, but the hills around my house are already quite slippy as we say here in Pittsburgh. If you are making the trek into Oakland for class (be it bravery or a distinct difference in comparative accumulation) and Jim happens to say anything or show something that is of particular interest, could you please post it here to share?
As per the syllabus, we were supposed to learn basic Lightroom use last week and do a work session tonight on our HDR assignment. I'm not sure if Jim intends to alter the syllabus, so any notes would be very helpful.
Safe travels everyone!

Nice HDR tutorial
I stumbled onto this tutorial today. It is done with just one photo, but to me it is most interesting because of the step-by-step instruction while processing the image in Photomatix and then in Photoshop.
I believe that the title of this post will link you directly to the tutorial.

HELP!
I think I'm making this HDR assignment more difficult than it needs to be. I find myself confused on how to export a raw file from Lightroom to Photoshop-or even if you can?! So obviously if you can't transfer the raw file you can't work in camera raw on the file before starting the HDR process. Am I making any sense? So, what I need to know is this: what do I do with a raw file in Lightroom to get it into Photoshop? Someone, anyone...help me before I loose my mind. Thanks in advance.

The Eyes Have It
My sister sent me an email the other day with a link to an interesting photograph she knew I would like (she's seen my glass eye collection but ironically a colleague had sent her the image just because it's interesting-my guess is my sister did not share my eyeball fetish with the colleague!)
I probably like the hand in the image as well as the eye. The lines on the hand are so crevice-like. I'm sorry, I don't remember who had the 'hand photos' the other night in class, but I think that's such a great idea. http://collections.carli.illinois.edu/u?/bra_jack,1114
Also, if anyone wanted to check out the lens baby I included the link...I think!

February 1 Class
I've added everyone's email that I received in class tonight. I really enjoyed seeing everyone's work. This is my first foray into the blogosphere so anyone out there with tips about the blog please, don't be shy. I'm always interested in seeing other peoples work so I hope everyone shares links to his or her own photos and or interesting websites. Hope everyone has a good week.

Reason for this Blog
I thought it might be helpful to all of us in the class if we had a forum to share ideas, problems, (photography related!), questions-really anything anyone feels may be of help or interest to the class including links to favorite websites, discussions of upcoming assignments, etc. See you in class.
